8 Interesting Things Colorado is Famous For

Table of Contents

Are you wondering what Colorado is known for? Where do we even begin?

Colorado is full of beautiful landscapes, mountain views, and astonishing surroundings. It offers a variety of outdoor activities, from skiing and hiking to mountain biking and horseback riding.

Colorado is known for many different things, but here are the eight most interesting things that you probably didn’t know about.

Disneyland Inspiration

One of the most lesser-known things about Colorado is that the Old Town Square in Fort Collins was Walt Disney’s inspiration for the Main Street in Disneyland. It was co-created by Walt Disney himself and Harper Goff, who grew up in Fort Collins

Since he was a former resident of the town, Harper used old photographs to model the buildings along Main Street, USA, in Disneyland, California.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park

Remember Stephen King’s The Shining? Well, then, you must also remember the notoriously scary hotel from the novel and the movie. Believe it or not, The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park inspired the Overlook Hotel in King’s bestselling novel and the 1980 film adaptation. It was even a filming location for the related TV miniseries.

The good news for you is (or is it?) that you can go up there and stay the night!

National Parks

Another interesting thing that Colorado is known and famous for is the gorgeous national parks. Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison are the most popular ones.

If you’re a fan of diverse scenery, wildlife, and prehistoric wonders, Colorado is a must-visit place. Throughout these parks, you can see moose, elk, bears, bighorn sheep, bobcats, deer, coyotes, and numerous birds.

MicroBreweries

If you’re a beer enthusiast, you’re going to love this next fact. Colorado is also famous for its great deal of microbreweries, and it’s home to more than 140 craft breweries. It’s a beer lover’s land, that’s for sure!

You can get a taste of locally-made ales, lagers, and other fine beverages in almost every town and city. From New Belgium, The King of all microbreweries in Fort Collins, Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver to Avery Brewing Company in Boulder, there are tons of great craft breweries in Colorado.

Marijuana is Legal

As of November 2012, marijuana is legal in the state of Colorado. Interestingly enough, that made Colorado one of the first two in the nation (along with Washington) to legalize the use and possession of cannabis for recreational purposes.

Ski Towns

Colorado is famous for some iconic ski towns and legendary ski spots. Aspen, Telluride, Breckenridge, Steamboat and Crested Butte are some of the most popular ski towns in the region.

If you’ve ever heard of ski bums, you should now know that they are very much a real thing. These people live and breathe this sport, and Colorado is the perfect place for them.

Mountain Biking and Amazing Hiking

Colorado is a phenomenal place for mountain biking and amazing hiking. There are so many different opportunities for outdoorsy people who like to stay fit and spend their precious time in nature.

The Ultimate OUTDOOR Lifestyle

Last but certainly not least, Colorado is famous for having 300+ days of sun. This means it’s the ultimate outdoor adventure. Add the varying geographic terrain to the mix, and you’ve got yourself the state of your dreams!

If you’re an outdoorsy person with an adventurous spirit, you’re going to love Colorado.
